John Cheever is one of my personal “big four.” Alongside Salinger, Updike, and Roth. I’m not saying they’re the best, but they’re important to me. I’m always shocked when people have never heard of any of them, but I am shockingly alarmed by the volume who say huh? to Cheever’s name.

It really hurts my heart.
