Brains Are Faulty Things

Brains are faulty things. 
You can spend all afternoon 
showing one that 2 + 2 = 4, but 
later that evening, perhaps over drinks
and dinner, out of the blue, it says, “or 5.”

By then, too tired to argue, bewitched 
by its wondrous shapeliness, you’ll 
think, sure, “5” or “3” or lemon curd — 
there are ranges of possibility for 
almost everything we used to think 
was a given.
