I used to ask if I should say the time at the moment they asked or estimate what the time would be…

I think I did that too when I was young. . . tried to sneak a peek at someone’s watch rather than ask them for the time. Plan B, if I couldn’t see their watch was to decide I didn’t want to know the time anyway.

It is a challenge to learn when the answer to a question has to be literally correct or when an estimation is okay.
