5 Minutes!— #001

Do you realize the importance of 5 minutes in your life?!… Do you realize how 5 minutes could change your life?!…

I had my second last paper of my finals yesterday. I came home and I knew that I wasn’t going to do so well in my finals, so I told my mom that my papers were not great and I would just manage to pass. She said,” OK”. She didn’t directly tell this to me, but I felt as if she was trying to say that I was not going to achieve anything in life just because I was not good in theory. I tried to tell her that I am just bad at studies and that does not mean that I am not going to achieve anything in life. But then, she told me the most famous line every Indian kid, or maybe any kid on this planet has ever heard..”I have never seen anyone who was successful without getting good grades”. After hearing that line I just went to my room and shut the door lock.

I put down my bag, cleared all the papers lying around on the bed from last night and sat down and started thinking about Mark Zuckerberg, Bill Gates, Steve Jobs and other college dropouts who didn’t need college degrees to determine their future. I started thinking about people who just did what they thought would change the world, and they indeed changed it. These thoughts came into my mind and I started thinking about what they had that I don’t ?… what made them so special that they had the power to change every bodies thinking ? I really wanted to know the answers to these questions because I could not even change my own mothers mind. And then I realized,… they had one very crucial thing which many of us don’t, and maybe that is the one that counts. The will to make it to the top. Many of us think about doing things that we love. But when people start judging us or questioning us, we give up. We leave the difficult path that would lead us to eternal happiness and we surrender to that easy path, which would make us a couple of dollars more, but would suck the life out of us. And at that moment it hit me that Mark Zuckerberg and Steve Jobs were not just any college dropouts, they dropped out of the most competitive and most famous college in the world, Harvard. The amount of work they would have put in , just to get into Harvard would be immeasurable. I was fooling myself by comparing me to Steve Jobs. I didn’t take into account the hours of work he did or the countless, sleepless nights he spend working on developing Apple. I just thought that If they managed it, I would manage it somehow. I then thought about the hours I spend watching repeated television shows or the time I spend on Facebook doing nothing but scroll down until it hits me that I had been wasting my time. I just didn’t invest anytime in making a business plan or learning about business or in anything I so proudly said that I would do in the future. I had been so naive in thinking that with no hard work I would achieve what millionaires had achieved. And all of a sudden everything went numb. I did not pay attention to the television show running on the T.V in the background or the sound of the dog barking outside my house. I just couldn’t move. At that very moment I thought to myself and I quote,”Are you that stupid?.. Did you really believe that you could amount to anything without the hard work?”. I got up, fired up my laptop and started working on what I really wanted to do and what would really be the starting point of me, making something out of myself.

It was really important for me to have that 5 minutes of silence around me to figure out what I wanted to do. Many of you have not yet had that 5 minutes. So, if you have read this article from the start to the end, take that 5 minutes out of your busy schedule and think about what you want to do. And who knows, maybe that 5 minutes could be the reason you become the happiest man in the world.
