After news broke that I had joined RetailMeNot as their CTO my inbox was temporarily flooded with congratulations from my personal and professional network. A follow up question from most of these folks was why I decided to leave Amazon and join RetailMeNot? It was heartening to see that many folks had used RetailMeNot before, but surprising to see them refer to RetailMeNot as a coupon company when it is now so much more.

The answer to the first question is actually very simple. RetailMeNot has the most direct and relevant product promise to a consumer compared to any other company I have worked for — including Amazon. That might seem like a tall claim but let me explain. Throughout my career I have been focused on solving a customer pain point really well, so that the customer would then compensate us for the value we delivered. At the end of the day the customer had to pay for the product. You pay Amazon for every purchase.

RetailMeNot is different and upends this notion. RetailMeNot’s product promise is that we are a savings destination that will save you money on almost everything you buy, at no cost to you, and with minimal to no effort on your part. I suggest you read the sentence above again. How can you not love it?

I will borrow Jeff Bezos’s comment from the 2016 Amazon shareholder letter about Prime and slightly modify it to say this: “You are being irresponsible if you are not using RetailMeNot.” Don’t you want to save money on every purchase for free?
