Vertical Garden Wall

Recently, with more and more cafes and eateries coming up and putting themselves up in a very crafty and unique decor, the demand for flowers and plants has also been going up. Decorations have taken a new turn by incorporating more blooms and greenery while gardening has set new trends in each little food joint that we come across these days. One such very unique trend that happens to be setting new styles in many places, not just eateries or diners is the walled garden or vertical gardening. No. Do not get me wrong. This isn’t something that has merely come up with the lack of space for our basic horizontal or floor gardening that we do. This is indeed a new form of architecture or décor — whatever you may like to call it.

I look at it as a new form of art, which is why today’s article is all about vertical gardening and some DIY tips related to it.

Let me first begin with a fancy story of from where I came up with the idea. As you know these days we are all lurking with our Smartphones in various places to get that perfect picture for our Instagram. Me, being someone close to that loves the idea of taking pictures especially to capture the essence of the place. I like to appreciate the beauty and the different forms of art and with vertical gardening, I think it has been taken to a whole new level, I mean literally!

So, there I was sitting in a café and gazing at this newly found décor. Completely dazzled, the café was covered with grills on two sides, with the intersection as the entrance gate. Not only was the entrance filled with flowers and lovely climbers and vines but the vines also curled through the grills which made up the walls. The grills were basically designed in a squared shape and each alternative square had a flower pot elevated on them. This particular design completely intrigued me. I had also visited one other place which shared a similar design but in this one, it was a full concrete wall with cubicles to hold tiny bonsai plants. That reminded me of whenever I send flowers to Gurgaon to my friend on her birthdays, she usually plants them in small pots and hangs them so they last longer. It also added to the beauty of the room. And as my curious nature always makes me imagine and re-imagine, I went for a search to find out how to put up such a vertical garden in a household structure.

Vertical gardening

And luckily for you guys, here I am sharing with you how to build up DIY vertical gardens for a unique household décor:

What you need: Metal hangers, wooden slabs or metal sheets, hammer, nail, adhesive, screws, screwdriver, terracotta pots, and of course, plants and soil!!

What to do:

Step 1- The first step towards the creation of your perfect vertical garden is to find the right spot. It should be mostly outside but depending on what plants or flowers you want to grow and which section of your house be it the patio or the front porch or the walls of the gate or maybe your living room even, you need to make the right decision.

Step 2- Once you know which spot you have chosen, it will be easier for you to decide what wooden slabs to use or where to place your plants if there is already space.

Step 3- If you are using wooden slabs where the line of plants will hang vertically the easiest option is to get a ship lap where you can simply stick the pots with adhesive. Or else you need to place the wooden slabs using hammer and nail.

Step 4 — Visualize the kind of design or look you want to give to the vertical garden and then attach the metal hangers with the screwdriver as per your desired placements

Step 5 — Make sure the plants are already potted. Once that’s done, what’s left is to place your terracotta pots on the hangers and that’s about it. Make the angle perfect, take a few steps back and look at the visual that if you have created!
