Hello!

This is week in Activities:

From MathStart, a series of 63 storybooks, organized into three levels for Pre-K through Grade 4. Each story teaches a different mathematical skill:

  • Level 1: Pre-K / Kindergarten: Beep Beep, Vroom Vroom! is a story about a little sister who loves to play with her big brother’s red, yellow and blue toy cars. Will she be able to get them back in the right order in time? Recognizing and being able to extend patterns is an important step in the development of logical thinking.
  • Level 2: Kindergarten — Grade 1: In A Fair Bear Share, Mama Bear wants to bake her extra special Blue Ribbon Blueberry pie so she sends the cubs out to gather nuts, seeds and berries, grouped into tens and ones. Learning how to regroup numbers is an essential skill for solving more advanced addition problems.
  • Level 3: Grades 2–4: Dave’s Down to Earth Rock Shop is based on a real “Dave” and a real store in Evanston, IL. There is even a natural history museum in the basement! Dave helps budding geologists Josh and Amy learn out to sort rocks by different attributes: size, color, type, hardness. Classifying is an important skill used in math and science.

From I See I Learn, a series of 16 stories that follow the adventures of the children in Miss Cathy’s class at Ready, Set Pre-K in See-and-Learn City. Each story focuses on a different social, emotional, health & safety and cognitive skill important for success in school and in life. For Pre-K / Kindergarten.

  • Skills Poster: Great Choice, Camille! is a story about learning how to make choices. Will Camille build a kite or plant a vegetable? See how Camille learns to dig in and make good choices! Managing anxiety about decision-making, understanding one’s choices, and being able to make decisions are all part of interacting successfully with others. It’s also important for children to be willing to make changes if their first choices aren’t available.
