Review: “Straight Talk, No Chaser: How to Find, Keep and Understand a Man”, the second book in a series of “tell it like it is” books written by comedian/radio personality/activist Steve Harvey, is phenomenal!! In his effort to enlighten his daughters, and women in general, on their misconceptions on the way that men think, he has hit a gold mine. He could probably write 5 more like this and not repeat himself.
In response to the numerous questions that Steve would receive from women while on tour promoting his book, “Act Like A Woman, Think Like A Man”, Steve took the questions that he continued to hear and wrote this book. The questions that Steve continuously heard made him realize that many women really didn’t have a clue as to how men thought and what types of messages some of their actions were really sending. Steve felt that in order to promote healthy, long lasting relationships between men and women, some additional advice just may prove useful for many of the women that he was coming into contact with. In this book, Steve goes on to further explain some of the points that he was trying to get across in the initial book that may have been misunderstood and touch on some others that needed to be discussed.
Because of the negative response that his “Act Like A Woman, Think Like A Man” received from many men, who said that Steve was giving away all of their secrets, in “Straight Talk, No Chaser” Steve uses his comedic style to open the doors to get men and women to read and discuss some topics with each other, and others that are deemed “For Ladies Only”. The topics that are discussed in order to provoke conversations between men and women range from “Understanding Men” and what Steve calls “Dating by the Decades: A Guide to How Men Feel About Relationships in Their 20s, 30s, 40s, 50s, and Beyond” to other chapters devoted to dispelling certain “Myths” by telling female readers the “Facts” behind whether Men REALLY find women intimidating. When Steve turns his attention solely to his female readers, he starts off by telling them “Let’s Stop the Games…” and the effects of “Nagging” and then tells them “…How to Get What You Want Out of a Man”. He even goes on to talk just to the Men and tells them, “Ten Commandments to Pleasing a Woman”.
I truly enjoyed reading this book. It has proven to provoke many discussions with my husband and daughter, and make me think about many of the things that I was told by my Mother and Grandmother while I was a young woman and how it differed from the advice that was given to me by my father and grandfather, and from how my husband explains things, when discussing the same topics. There seems to be many ideologies that have been passed down from Mother to Daughter over the generations that no longer rings true. With fewer healthy and/or functional Mother/Father and Father/Daughter relationships as examples in more recent years, books like Steve Harvey’s becomes more prevalent. It was a definite easy read that answers the questions that so many women, younger and older, have but have not known who or how to ask.
