From sales to digital marketing, using the Udacity DMND.
There I was doing my job as a sales demonstrator for Vitamix giving samples and telling stories to around 997 people everyday at major retails stores, I know a lot of talking.
Everyday I wake up early enough in the morning to get ready for my 12 hrs day. I travel a lot to the Bay area in Silicon valley from Utah where I live with my wife and kids, for weeks at a time I have to leave them so I can earn enough to provide them with everything they need.
One day, I was like “there most be a better way for me to make a living without leaving my family behind for so long”. Because of that I started to pay attention and ask to people at work what problem they had with their businesses or jobs.
“More money is wasted in marketing than in any other human activity (outside of government activities, of course)”. — Al Ries & Jack Trout
Because of that I discover most small business (usually less than 30 employees) were having a hard time with bringing customer into their doors. Some of their struggles have to do with discovering who their customers are and where they can find them. Others struggle with developing a marketing plan or had paid a lot of money to consultants who cannot deliver real results.
I realize this got to be an opportunity for me to provide some value.
“How can you achieve your 10 year plan in the next 6 months?”— Peter Thiel
I knew from previous experiences the only way to learn as much as possible was to find a mentor in the industry. It takes one from the industry to know what I need to learn and what I don’t need to learn to deliver real value as a digital marketer.
“When the student is ready the teacher will appear.” — Unknown
Around this same time looking at my facebook feed, I came across an online course about digital marketing maybe because of my searches. I’ve discover Udacity was lunching their first Digital Marketing nanodegree and their curriculum is taught by industry professionals.
So , I enrolled in one of their cohorts and I feel confident making the transition from sales to digital marketing. Their advise is as big as your vision of the future. If you want to be successful at anything you need to invest in yourself. So for now Udacity seems like a solid program for digital marketing.
