Without This Ingredient, You Can’t Break Your Bad Habits
Bad habits can be a pain to break, especially those that have been dominating your life for a long time. When you think they’re releasing their hold on you, they come back with a vengeance, before you even had a chance to rejoice.
If you’ve been biting your nails since you were a kid, it might take you awhile to stop.
If you’ve been typing on the keyboard with two fingers for years, you’ll move to touch-typing only with monumental efforts.
If you’ve been indulging in sweets all your life, letting go of the delicacies will be an epic battle.
Bad habits are stubborn and breaking them takes longer and is harder than you initially anticipate.
And, when you’ve labored for some time on breaking a bad habit and witness very little progress, it can be quite discouraging, to the point that you may start believing you’ll never change and are condemned to remain a shackled by that habit forever.
This isn’t true. You can break your bad habits — any of them.
One ingredient that’s indispensable if you’re to overcome discouragement and continue your journey towards better habits is BELIEF. You must never stop believing that you can change and that you WILL change. Without belief, you can’t break your bad habits.
Habits, good and bad, are learned behaviors, and thus, they can be changed; you can learn new behaviors, better behaviors. You weren’t born with your habits; you picked them up along the way. Therefore, you can drop them and pick up new ones.
Also, remember that you aren’t the only one, in the history of mankind, who has struggled with the bad habit that is keeping you bound. Many, before you, have had to fight the same battle and they have conquered. And if they have succeeded, you can too. But you must believe.
The alternative is to let the bad habit continue to rule your life and slowly steal your life away from you. Not a good alternative, if you ask me. You either stay the course until you break that bad habit, or, at least, you die trying. But you never stop believing. Never.
