The “orange liquid” is bacteria (Bacillus sp. most likely) because you didn’t sterilize the grain. Their endospores aren’t even momentarily inconvenienced by boiling ; its only roughly 212F but it takes 249F when wet, (key word here being “wet” which can only be accomplished at 249F if its under pressure; otherwise it will never get above 212 without dry roasting your grain) to kill them; over 300F if they’re dry. This method most definitely will not work for many species of mushrooms; oysters are unique in that it often doesn’t matter how contaminated your medium is because oysters will overcome and overrun it most of the time while most mushrooms will not be able to. You also said “ Once I figure it all out, that is!” its already been figured out; that you can’t sterilize grain and still keep it wet unless you cook it under pressure. Your colonized jar does NOT look like its supposed to; its struggling and showing visible signs of stress because its contaminated with bacteria which produce substances that are toxic to most fungi.
