Life is too short for bad Coffee!

Executive Summary

Overview

Barista Valet, an upscale coffee delivery platform, tasked us with testing the usability of their existing application and adding features to support their growing client base. We were excited by the opportunity to work with them and help bring high quality coffee to their clients.

Goal

Our goal was to increase the usability and functionality of the existing Barista Valet application, as well as develop new features based on user feedback.

Methods

We began with learning about Barista Valet. We also took an in-depth look at their App. We completed a Business model canvas, competitive feature analysis and a heuristic analysis.

After our business research, we conducted interviews with users and non users of the Barista Valet App. We studied the interviews and developed insights to identify actionable features.

We pivoted to the design phase by first identifying the features we wanted to build into the new app. We then performed a design studio first on paper and then a low fi with the staff of Barista Valet. From our design studio, we developed a mid fidelity prototype. We tested the mid fidelity app with first round user testing. We mad changes based on data and upgraded the app to high Fidelity. We retested with the new version. We then made final changes and finalized the high fidelity app.

The changes we made to the Barista Valet app increased clarity and usability for our interviewees. We are excited to see what the future looks like for Barista Valet!

Persona

A persona was created to help understand our target audience. This allowed us to narrow issues users are experiencing and find a solution for persona frustrations. We started thinking of what features that could help users.

Journey Map

The study team used a journey map to visualize the day of life of users related to coffee and their daily life. The journey would begin with research, then identify needs, and then taking action.

Revised Problem Statement

After finishing our research, we returned to the problem statement to revise it according to the research.

Revised Problem Statement:

We believe that our interview insights supported our problem statement, however we made a few revisions and added more detail to create the following:

Research » Design

The Team armed with insights, we pivoted to the design phase. We used a Feature Prioritization matrix to focus on features to include as we made improvements to the current Barista Valet App. Based a a list of features, we decided what was essential.

Takeaways
We ultimately prioritized the following features for our MVP of the barista valet app:

Design

The team began designing an improved prototype to bring the ultimate coffee experience to neighborhoods.

Design Studio-Part 3

Hi-Fidelity mobile App Screens with Wireframes

The team developed Hi-Fidelity Wireframes based on concepts from design studio. They included a home screen as well as exploration, learn, locate, coffee quiz, neighborhood section.

User Testing: First Round

To begin evaluating and analyzing if our proposed features and designs were in good standing, we needed to conduct usability tests. In total, we conducted 5 usability tests with different individuals on our MidFi prototype. Users need to complete 4 tasks.

User Testing: Second Round

The team made changes to the prototype and developed a hi-fidelity prototype. We conducted a second round of testing which showed great improvement. We then made some minor improvements for a final prototype.

The team developed Hi-Fidelity Wireframes based on concepts from design studio. They included a home screen as well as exploration, learn, locate, coffee quiz, neighborhood section.

Conclusion

The team set out to identify solutions to help with the improval of Barista Valet App and help people enjoy, learn, grow as a community in their neighborhood with Coffee as the Catalyst. We researched to gain insights in how coffee is a part of people’s lives.. The team then pivoted to the design phase that began on paper and ended as a tested Hi-fidelity mobile prototype. To conclude this project, we used Heart metrics to monitor success and followed up with recommendations.
