In this guide we will briefly cover how to restore your Dell XPS 15 laptop to its brand new state. You will need a USB drive with at least 16 GB space, so make sure you have one ready.

This guide has been created for my exact model, which is the 7590. Some steps may vary if your model is not the same.

You need to locate the “Dell Service Label”, which is shown in “Dell update” application. It is an alpha-numeric string like JKD32M5

This is where the Dell Service Label is located

The next thing you have to do is going to Dell website and downloading “Dell OS Recovery Tool”. You will be asked for your Dell Service Label in order to download the software.

Once the software is installed and opened, you need to select your computer then click “Next”

Initial menu for Dell OS Recovery Tool

In the next step, you need to insert the 16 GB USB drive you have, then select it in the box, then click on “Download”

Dell OS Recovery Tool will download the source image for your laptop and format your USB drive with it. Follow the rest of the instructions to complete the process.

Once the USB drive is ready, boot your computer using it. That can be done rebooting and pressing F12 repeatedly on the black “Dell logo” screen. Follow the steps on the USB bootloader and your laptop will be restored.

I couldn’t get screenshots of this process, so feel free to post them if you have them, and I’ll include them in this post.

Hope this guide helps someone else!
