Finch. Important Lessons We Must Learn Before It’s Too Late
A trip with Tom Hanks that will make you cry
If you want to watch a kind of film that keeps you on your toes, but without giant spiders and chainsaws, this film is for you. This is a dangerous journey of heroes in a desolate post-apocalypse, where there are no zombies, and the most terrible danger is other people.
Finch is a bit like The Martian with his spacesuit and lonely survival, or I’m Legend. And I was a little afraid that Finch would be a failure when I found out about the idea of the film. After all, the post-apocalyptic topic is not new, what do they want to say to the audience in this movie? But the film did not disappoint. And there is something to say.
Finch is a very instructive movie, but not for children. The lessons must be learned by adults.
Man, the Dog, And Robots
Four crew members of the “space” van are forced to go on a dangerous journey. Finch and his dog Goodyear. A small but cute dog-like helper robot named Dewey. And a robot, who looks like a person, who has just learned to walk, and already knows 100,500 facts about everything.
Finch
Finch is the only human on this fun team. And he is almost the only person we see throughout the film, except for a short flashback whits other three people.
Needless to say, Tom Hanks played his part well. He was great! To be honest, I would not have paid attention to this film if not for Tom Hanks. I’m not surprised if this role brings one more Oscar to Tom Hanks. After all, his game is worth it.
There are no special effects in this film that would distract from the performance of Tom Hanks. His hero, Finch, is a vulnerable ordinary person who has adapted to new conditions of survival. Although no, he is not an ordinary person, he is a talented engineer. But still, he has no red leotard and superpower.
By the way, the costume, what we see Tom Hanks wearing on the poster, was real. I mean, the suit did really have an air conditioning system. The suit was comfortable enough for Tom Hanks to sleep in it during the break, sitting in his chair with covered the visor without even leaving the set.
Jeff
An android robot named Jeff was played by Caleb Landry Jones. He not only voiced but partly played a robot, wearing a motion-capture suit.
It is interesting to observe the reaction of this original robot to what he learns about people, and the new world, which is not the same as in the books. Jeff isn’t just a minor character. This is a real hero who learns in the travel. And it learns really quickly.
Jeff, like a child, is impatient to get to know the world in which he appeared yesterday. Jeff is very inquisitive, he has a lively mind, and he looks so human. This is not an ordinary machine, Jeff is a different form of life.
Goodyear
Special thanks to the adorable dog, who also played great. Yes, this is a real dog — Seamus, who played a dog named Goodyear. It was Tom Hanks who chose him for the shoot.
Wait a minute, dogs can’t play roles, can they? I don’t know what theatrical courses this dog attended, but he’s great.
And by the way, the working title of the film is Goodyear.
Global Warming and Ozone Holes
“The sky is like Swiss cheese,” says Finch … This “Swiss cheese”, according to the plot of the film, caused catastrophic climate change.
Global warming and ozone holes, this is not a fantasy and not a distant future. This is a real problem that exists today, which is already bringing tangible changes. Humanity, through its activities, only accelerates the pace of global changes.
Perhaps unbearable heat, lifeless desert, and deadly hurricanes are the inevitable future of our planet. And if we can’t stop warming now, how can we hope to reverse warming in the future when the problem gets worse?
Spoiler alert! If you want to watch a movie without knowing the plot, come back after watching 😉
The Power to Go Forward
People like Finch are a ray of light that does not fade even in the chaos of the post-apocalypse. He creates, he cares, and he can enjoy life. With his fading strength, Finch tries to pass on his experience to the robot he created, making the robot more human, more like himself in this way.
He has a lot of books and little food. But Finch does not lose heart in such difficult moral and physical conditions, where each new day is a new challenge. He uses what he has, and continues his fight.
Finch knew he was going to die soon. And he couldn’t do anything about it. But he was able to construct a robot so that there was someone to take care of his four-legged friend.
Finch taught the robot not only how to survive, but also how to live and take care of others, as Finch did himself. In the end, caring for someone gives meaning to our life, gives us the power to go forward.
After Finch’s death, Robot Jeff wonders what to do next. And he finds his answer in the dog. Goodyear becomes his meaning of life.
The film shows what one day awaits all of us. This is the end of a person’s life path. And the end of human civilization. But this is not the end of humanity and kindness. Since life is beautiful, and you must not forget the 5th lesson and have fun.
