Award winning Romanian historical epic film “Mihai Viteazul” or “Micheal, the Brave” (1970) directed by Sergiu Nicilaescu and starring Amza Pellea, Ion Besoiu, Irina Gardescu, Ioana Bulca among others.

Its a story told of a period at the 16th century, when Michael (Amza Pellea) unites the three Romanian principalities of Wallachia, Moldavia & Transylvania into one country. He was already a ruler of Wallachia and had to face several enemies, among them the Turks, and also princes of other small principalities.

He unites the three principalities and then gets cheated by his own men and lost it all. He lost all his trusted men in the battle and also his dear son.

The movie has grand war scenes which are epic, involving thousands of men, weapons, horses, cannons, spears, etc. The war scenes are all well shot. For a 1970 film, the production values are quite good with set design, camera work, costumes etc. of a superior order.

It is supposedly one of Romania’s most viewed films worldwide. Amza Pellea has done a good role as Micheal. The length of the movie at 3 hours + is too long to enjoy it. IMDB 4/10
