Beautiful award winning biographical Irish film “My Left Foot”, directed by Jim Sheridan and starring Daniel Day Lewis, Brenda Fricker, Ruth McCabe, Fiona Shaw, Ray McAnally among others.

It is based on the true life of Christy Brown, the Irish poet and painter, who had cerebral palsy leaving him with the use of only his left foot. That was later in life that Christy Brown (Daniel Day Lewis) was able to write and paint with his left foot. Early in his life he was unable to do that or even speak anything.

Born into a large family of working class Irish family, Christy was doted upon by his mother Brenda Fricker though his father Ray McAnally did not have much hope on him, until he starts writing with his left foot. One thing led to another and soon he was painting prodigiously and writing as well.

He got professional help from Eileen Cole (Fiona Shaw) to whom he fell in love also but she had another boyfriend. Later during his book launch, he meets another woman Mary Carr (Ruth McCabe) with whom he spends sometime and marries her.

Daniel Day Lewis has brought off the impossible to act in the way of a cerebral palsy person. Apart from him, his mother Brenda Fricker has acted quite superbly for which she rightly got the best supporting actress award at the Oscars. Daniel Day Lewis picked up the best actor award for this movie.

The real life story of Christy Brown is much more detailed, but obviously all of that cannot have been covered. IMDB 7/10
