Brilliant Palestinian autobiographical documentary “Naila and the Uprising” directed by Julie Bacha and starring the main protagonist of the documentary, Naila Ayesh.

Naila Ayesh was part of the first intifada struggle against Israeli occupation of Palestinian territories and its reign of terror. She was arrested while she was pregnant and tortured so much she had a miscarriage. She was arrested second time whilst her son Majd was only six months old and forced to endure the separation from her son, whilst she was still a nursing mother.

Her husband Jamal was forcibly deported out of Palestine by the Israeli authorities. The first intifada was led by women’s movement of civil disobedience much like Mahatma Gandhi’s civil disobedience movement against the British before India’s independence.

They boycotted Israeli business so much that the Israeli government got concerned about the movement. In the end the Oslo Conference and the recognition of Palestinian Authority led by late Yasser Arafat was a big disappointment to the women who were involved in the intifafa. The main point of the intifada was that the Israeli settlement in the West Bank and Gaza should stop.

But it has continued apace at faster pace after the Oslo declaration. Its a beautifully made movie with lots of original videos, footages, interviews of the women involved in the intifada and also Israeli lawyers and reporters.
