What do I hate about some recruiters

I thought for a while before writing this down, because I really needed to remember all the things I hate about some recruiters. So, if you are a recruiter, don’t get offended, it may not be about you if you are not doing the points stated below. It is just about some recruiters, it is just a personal opinion and some people may think the same way or not.

1. Calling before emailing

I know that I may have my CV placed somewhere, and I know in that CV I have my phone number, but I also know that right there, I have my email address as well. It is all right to call me but think about it before doing it.

Because, I may be at a client, I may be in a meeting, which sums up that I am at work. And I don’t know how other people feel about this, but I am not very comfortable about being at work at my desk and discuss in front of everyone else new job opportunities. Also, 90% of the recruiters that called me, never asked if it is a good time to talk now or they should call me later. Send me an email and we can agree on a day and a time to discuss.

2. If you are asking, you should listen

If you want to be nice and ask me how I am doing, don’t be rude and not even listen to it. I was called by a recruiter that called me and asked me “How are you? How are you doing?” and I replied the exact following words “I am attending a funeral, someone close to me just passed away, so call me next week.”

The recruiter response was “That’s alright. I wanted to see if you are looking for new opportunities.”

You gotta be f*#@*** kidding me. Really? You heard for sure what I said, but were you listening, or you were just browsing for something you need on Amazon? Don’t try to be polite, by asking this question, if you will be rude by not even listening what the other end is saying to you. It is very, very rude.

3. Don’t play with job description

I am a front-end JavaScript developer, so most of the times, I am receiving jobs that are exactly what I am looking for, but 15% of the time, I am receiving job description that in the title say they need a front-end developer and in the description I can clearly see full stack developer, with MySQL and Java and .NET senior skills, which is weird, of course.

When I get back to recruiters with a “No” answer and why I don’t like it, they start getting back to me, that the role doesn’t need back end at all, that the role is purely front end. I believed it the first time and the second time, but not anymore.

It is simple, If the job doesn’t require that, just remove it from the job description. I went twice further trusting the recruiter that the job didn’t required lots of other things that was in the job description, just to find out that the company actually wanted someone that knew everything, literally everything.

4. Stop the bulls*#*

I know that you really want to sell the client out, but if your client is not one of the biggest, like really one of the biggest or the biggest something in the business, stop putting that in the email, because, for me it doesn’t really matter if it is a big player in the market, it matters if they uses the technologies I like and if the team is great. It matters to me the product as well, but it doesn’t matter to me if the company is the number one in everything.

Also, if the company it is a start-up don’t put in front of me numbers of how many million or billions got as funding, it may matter to a management position, but not quite to a developer. Having said “well funded” it is enough said.

5. Don’t try to convince me/us

If someone says no to a job description, even if they add or not a reason for that, stop trying to convince them that the role you sent would be the right one for them.

If I saw something in a job description that I don’t like, I have the right to say no, but I don’t want to waste time reading or hearing you trying to convince me that this role is the best for me. I know me, you don’t. I mean, I already made a decision and we can move on with our lives, is that simple.


These are the top 5 points I don’t like about recruiters and the first 2 of them annoy me the most and make me a bit angry, and that’s why I started to write this post, just to get it off my chest. I am not saying this is how everyone feels, but it is how I feel, and maybe some others are feeling as well, so just paying a bit more attention to those details may help you if you are a recruiter. If you feel I was a bit angry when I wrote this article, I can assure you that I was when I started it, but after that, I became calm because this is what represents me.
