I said this on Twitter earlier, but it seems appropriate that I stick my comment here:
It’s crucial that any discussion about freedom starts by telling apart ‘positive freedom’ from ‘negative freedom’ as Fromm put it.
In post-meaning, post-Orwellian times, we don’t even agree on what freedom means. It seems necessary that such meanings be stated.
When Fromm wrote ‘Escape From Freedom’ in 1941 he correctly diagnosed what would turn out to be our worst societal disease.
It would be incredibly stupid, we would be unworthy of succeeding as a species if we didn’t take heed of his warning 75 years on.
