Racism or defense

By Vince Shields

One of the most impactful events in the history of the United States was the shootings of 17 year old Trayvon Martin. This shook the country and created a huge divide between whites and blacks in America. The disturbance occurred in Sanford, Florida in an altercation between a white hispanic man and the black teen, Trayvon, ended up in a deadly shooting that found Trayvon dead and George Zimmerman saying he killed him on self defense. I read this in both of the following articles one by CNN http://www.cnn.com/2013/02/25/justice/florida-zimmerman-5-things/ and the other by the New York Times http://www.nytimes.com/2012/04/02/us/trayvon-martin-shooting-prompts-a-review-of-ideals.html. These articles use different methods and ways to create and produce bias views in their articles. Of the two CNN seemed to be more bias in creating a negative view towards Zimmerman.

In the fist article by CNN it s presented in a way to create bias by the way it is stacked. It starts with just some simple facts of the situation but then shifts toward a more attack role at Zimmerman. This can be seen in the fifth paragraph when it says “Stand your ground’ law doesn’t apply” this was shown to negate the only defense Zimmerman really had. Also the article ends with a paragraph that says the Trayvon would be 18 this month and it is using this to create a persona of innocence for Trayvon. For example “ His supporters marked his birthday with a peace rally in a historically black part of Sanford in central Florida.” The article also picture of the article show two happy people. One being Trayvon who is smiling and seems happy and Zimmerman who looked as if he was taking a mug shot and smiling big the whole time.

The other article was better but still involved some bias. Like with the diction of the article when it says “race, tragedy and outrage collide” this makes it more about the race factor and less of a self defense case. Plus it constantly stresses the fact that Trayvon was both black and un armed “unarmed black teenager shot dead.” These create a bias towards him and make Zimmerman look worse. Then the stacking of the new article make the article just constantly hitting the reader with race issue after issue and you are lead to believe that this is Zimmerman fault. But of all the negative they do a good job trying to give all the information in a non bias way also the picture is very non bias. That is what makes this article less bias and better for a audience.

In conclusion news articles have the power to control what the consumer is presented and how which can cause huge bias and is not the correct way to look at issues. This is why you should chose the New York Times over CNN in this case because it is less bias. You need to select your own new outlet and check to make sure that they are very non bias. That is how consumers can control bias.
