Delight with Design

A designer’s job is to minimize the effort needed for users to achieve their objectives. This is the foundation of user experience design — the process of enhancing user satisfaction by improving the usability, accessibility, and pleasure in the interaction between the user and the product. But how do creators design effective user experiences?

  1. Understand the end-user — their problems, perspectives, and objectives collectively influence their online journey. The more you know about the user, the more likely you’ll be able to build something that fills a role in their life.
  2. Develop a vision — brainstorming, sketching, and prototyping allow designers to map out how their product adds value and where friction might occur in the user’s journey.
  3. Test, refine, repeat—feedback is key. Not just what people say, but understanding how users engage with a product is valuable insight that should drive design decisions.

The world of tech products is a continuously changing digital environment, so the design process is cyclical. New mediums and evolving user expectations require frequent revisiting of each step forcing designers to improve or get left behind.

A great example is the rapid evolution of video, VR, and AR. We’ll take a closer look at how these modes of rich media are transforming the way people consume information in the next post.
