Did you ever notice that some dog owners look a lot like their dog? Sometimes you can just look at a person and take a good shot at if they are a dog or cat person, what kind they own, what music they listen to — and of course, what kind of vehicle they drive. Stereotypes are often oversimplified, and make assumptions about things, but see if some of these VW owner stereotypes don’t ring true to you, or at least what you may have heard:

Volkswagen New Beetle

Cutesy, stylish “chick” car, probably packed full of high-school-aged females dancing to the latest boy band or pop star song.

Volkswagen Golf GTI or Golf R

Sporty and racy, these attracted loud, brash, outspoken drivers in their early-to-mid twenties. Snapback hats, lowered suspension, probably more than a few “attitude” stickers slapped on the back windshield.

Volkswagen Jetta

Middle-aged, probably professional, may like to wear flannel, likes craft beer and coffee, has a family or plans on having one soon, the Jetta is uber-sensible and attracts the sensible owners. The average Jetta owner has a stable career, and there’s a good chance they either own their own business or have a little gig or secondary career going on the side of their bill-paying job.

Volkswagen Passat

The Jetta for middle-management, the Passat takes the everyman sensibilities of the Jetta and adds a little more room, a little more technology, and a little more chrome. The Passat driver is just the Jetta driver on a better salary — think pharmaceutical representative, dentist, or professor.

Volkswagen Bus

The original hippie-mobile is still a hippie-mobile. There’s a really good chance that, as you pass the Bus, you will see flashes of tie-dye and some Grateful Dead stickers, and you’ll hear some golden oldies blaring out of the speakers. There’s a good chance the driver was at Woodstock — the original in 1969 and the 40th anniversary in 2009, but not the embarrassment from 1999.

Classic Beetle

blog-vw-orig-beetle

Hippies with mechanical aptitude, the old-school Beetle driver is like the Bus driver, but likes to work on their own car. Where the Bus has stayed in great condition thanks to being tarped and garage-kept when not in use, the Classic Beetle is run into the ground, fixed up, then run into the ground again, by the same guy who has kept it running for 30+ years with WD-40, duct tape, a hammer and a wrench. Classic Beetle drivers are ingenious, and impossible to beat at Punch Bug.

Older Volkswagen Jetta

We can guarantee that the minute you saw the word Jetta, you thought of a college-aged female. It’s not surprising either, given the Jetta combines a degree of cuteness with one of the best safety records of any vehicle — any parent is happy to have their child in one. A sensible choice for college and on into life after college, since it can also fit clothing and other apartment needs.

All of this is in good fun of course — here at Volkswagen of South Charlotte, we’ve heard these stereotypes plenty of times. Sure, sometimes they are true, but often they are off the mark. What we do know is that Volkswagen owners all love a budget-friendly, high-quality vehicle, and that’s why they keep buying VWs. So stop in, and let us help you find the right car for your style — maybe you’re the craft-beer-loving professor who likes Grateful Dead and you want a New Beetle, it doesn’t matter to us, we’ll help you find what you’re looking for and won’t judge you for it!
