Review: As a life long Met fan I anxiously awaited this book the entire off season. In some respects, I really enjoyed it. Jay has a unique and interesting background, he told some very funny stories and he comes off very likable and genuine in his love and regard for the franchise and its players, managers and front office people. But at the same time, I’m kind of disappointed. I gathered from the title not to expect an airing of dirty laundry or too much inside info, but three things bothered me throughout:(1) Parts of the book just came off as a re-telling of Mets history … this is a franchise with so many self-inflicted PR issues over the years, I would have liked to understand more about how he dealt with some of those challenges, but most were not discussed(2) There was an over-reliance on quotes and excerpts from newspaper articles … I would have preferred to hear more directly from Jay himself(3) Factual errors; the most egregious is when he tells a story of consulting with his Rabbi about what he should do after game 6 of the 86 series was rained out and rescheduled for Yom Kippur … except that never could have happened … first of all, game 7 was rained out, not game 6, but more importantly, Yom Kippur that year was 2 weeks before game 6!! Either bad memory or bad editing, but he went on for a full page about this and it just wasn’t the caseMost hardcore Met fans will still enjoy this since he’s such a beloved figure in team history, and in fairness, the parts about 9/11 and Shannon Forde are extremely touching and well written. Just be prepared for less of an insider’s view than you would expect from someone who was behind the curtain for 40 years.

Review: When I heard about Jay’s book and its release date, I pre-ordered it and waited with great anticipation. Based on his long affiliation with the Mets, I was looking forward to reading about many stories that took place behind the scenes. Instead, it was just a recap of the Mets rise during the 80’s which Mets’ fans know all too well how it took place. The rest of the book was overly filled with quotes praising Jay. It’s not at all what I expected. I was very disappointed with the book overall. The only reason I gave it a 2-star rating is due largely to the chapter he dedicated to Shannon Forde. It was a heartfelt chapter where his voice really shined through. It’s a shame more of the book wasn’t the same.

Review: It reads like a compilation. Lots of stories, quotes, and anecdotes about the author, by writers and media types. A good number of these quotes were from NJ-based newspapers. Which is illustrative of one of the weaker characteristics of this book: it seems to have been written for people who are not necessarily Mets fans, but may be NY-area baseball fans. So a lot of the stories related to events and players from the ’86 World Champs and ’00 NL Championship teams. It’s like the teams of the lean years (and for the Mets of the early ’80 through the teens, there are plenty of “lean” years) were not worth mentioning. So, as one might expect, there was a lot about Carter, Doc, Straw, Henrnandez, and about Piazza and John Franco, and about Wright and deGrom. Also, really deep and perhaps to the point of obsessive, probes of managers Johnson, Valentine, and Collins. Jay seemed to really like Bobby V., who was a bit of a self-promoter, and always came across like a guy who was running for office. He had almost nothing to say about less flashy, Baseball Guy skippers like Jerry Manuel and Dallas Green. This probably works as a generic baseball book, but by a Mets fan standard, there is a paucity of light shed on stars on bad teams, fan favorites, and future manager and executive types. There were almost no mentions of the likes of guys like Gregg Jefferies, Jeff Kent, and Justin Turner. No Bad Teams stars; like Todd Hundley, Jeromy Burnitz, and Marlon Byrd. No Fan-faves like Milledge, Wigginton, and McEwing. Nothing of substance about Ed Lynch, Ron Gardenhire, Chris Woodward, or Tony Clark.Jay seems to have developed deep connections with a handful of guys, but did not seem to offer any insight on most others, so the book comes across like it was written (or compiled) by an external observer. I was not expecting a Tell-All from a guy like Jay, but with a bold title like “Mr. Met” I expected something more intimate.

Review: I’ve been a Met fan for 50 years so I feel bad giving 3 stars to this book. It is a pleasant, easy read. I enjoyed reading about Jay’s childhood and his career path to the Mets media relations dept. He seems like a good guy with a big heart.Beyond that, there isn’t much here. He is an “organization guy” so he was never going to write a “tell-all” and reveal secrets. Still, I expected a bit more than a PR-type retelling of events. For example, when writing about 1986 team, he never discusses the infamous bar brawl in Houston. As the head of media relations at the time, I would think that this incident would have caused him headaches. I was surprised that it wasn’t mentioned. Alternatively, he does reference the difficulties in dealing with — and protecting — certain players.Regardless, it is still an enjoyable book for Met fans.

Review: Hardly dove into ANYTHING significant you would like to hear the behind the scenes from as a Mets fan. Willie Randolph’s firing was encompassed in a paragraph and didn’t mention it was 3 am in California. The Mets flight home was Houston in 86 was recapped in a sentence and a joke about footing the bill. Should’ve expected this given the fact he was literally the PR man but was marketed as giving behind the scenes look into the last 40 years of the Mets but was just more of the same — Wilpon peer reviewed literature handed to Andy Martino to release on SNY. Seriously disappointing.

Review: Jay Horwitz overcame being born blind in one eye and pursued his love of sports. The Mets were his whole life for forty years. Jay tells some interesting stories about his friendship with Mets players.
