The Real Threat to America is Not Islam, It’s Christian Nationalism
The damage wrought by American Christian extremists make comparisons to the Taliban an unnecessary distraction
--
As your friendly neighborhood Muslim, allow me to remind you that Christian nationalism is an enduring threat to America’s democracy and seeks to establish a fascist theocracy.
It’s not Islam, Sharia, or Islamic law.
It’s Christian nationalism.
It’s not the Taliban or American Taliban.
It’s Christian nationalism.
It’s not even White Isis or Y’all Qaeda.
This perverse ideology believes God has chosen America and, specifically, white men as stewards of the land to implement the Kingdom of Heaven on Earth. It rejects the pacifist Jesus who preached love and compassion in favor of a “warrior” Jesus who will return with an AR-15 and use violence to restore order. It shouldn’t be a surprise that white Christian nationalism was in fact a major motivator for the Jan 6 violent insurrectionists who sought to overturn a free and fair election by any means necessary.
It was Christian nationalism that just overturned Roe v. Wade and removed women’s constitutionally protected rights. Christian nationalism is now threatening to come after marriage equality and the right to use contraceptives. Christian nationalism has just ensured that the current generation of Americans is the first one to have fewer rights than previous ones. Christian nationalism made it easier to be a gun in America than a woman or a kid in school trying to survive a school shooting. Christian nationalism is eroding the separation of church and state in favor of those Christians who agree with its destructive theology. Tragically, Christian nationalism has become the greatest enemy of Jesus and Christianity itself and is ensuring a generation of young people actively leave the faith entirely. Christian leaders in America have emerged to loudly condemn Christian nationalism as an aberration of their faith and a “persistent threat to both our religious communities and democracy.”
