On family and dignity.

A family member recently posted a transphobic meme on Facebook, a meme that further promoted the idea that being transgender is a choice made by trans people.

While I was not at all surprised by this post, my heart dropped all the same. I don’t feel that I can (or should necessarily) call her out publicly, but I also can’t be silent.

Being trans is not a choice. It is a truth that belongs to some people and not others. If that truth does not belong to you, then I understand that it can seem scary and strange. Most unfamiliar things are.

But why not take the opportunity to familiarize yourself with the beauty of all people- no matter the condition of their birth? Why continue to advance the cruel notion that trans people and other members of the LGBTQ community have willfully made a choice to make themselves the “other?” Why make them the “other?”

You’re here. You get to be here once. The very least you could do is respect those that are here with you. Be kind.

One clap, two clap, three clap, forty?

By clapping more or less, you can signal to us which stories really stand out.
