CEO: Hmmm I have an idea. I think we should add a “follow” button to our marketplace.
PM (being diplomatic): Aha that sound good…might work
CEO (gut feeling alert): Yeah, yeah it will! OK, then, let’s add it to our next sprint, please!
PM (given no option): A… ok…
CFO: Would love if you guys can kick-off feature X to enable us to proper invoicing for our cusotmers.
Customer: Can you do this feature for me. I’ve always faced an issue sorting for suppliers.

This is a typical story of what each PM faces every day, with ideas and requests flooding from everywhere.

But you have limited resources and you need to decide on what goes to the Roadmap.

Here’s what it looks like…

Any product manager understands that the key to product success is knowing where and what to spend your (and the company’s) limited money, time, and energy on.

The main job of a PM is to ensure that the right product is created and has all the features necessary to make it a massive seller in the market and with immense value to the customers.

Product prioritization is not just about features, ideas, or tags to rank potential ideas. It is a well-thought-out process built on objective measures that impact your roadmap and attempt to sift through the emotional aspects of individuals while discovering, and prioritizing what is essential according to the market dynamics and ever-evolving customer needs.

So, while many see it as just choosing a set of parameters that will sell a product or communicate a product better to the customer, it is the “gatekeeper” for invested emotional ideas that many PMs would gladly bypass.

Why a series of posts?

While writing this, it was pretty long, so I broke it into 5 pieces.

But “why that long?”, you may ask.

Well, I’ve done a lot of research on this topic and have been teaching it at Treford’s Product Management Bootcamp (Project-based learning for individuals and teams led by Product experts in Africa)

I’ve finally convinced them to share everything I taught about Product Prioritization with you for free!

So if you want to save time and get a complete grasp of what product prioritization is all about and how to build the right framework, then let’s get into it. You might need to save this post somewhere as it contains all the prioritization frameworks you’ll ever want to know.

Here’s what we’re going to dive through:

  1. 🤔 Why prioritization, anyway?
  2. 🧘‍♂️15 Proven Product Prioritization Frameworks.
  3. 💣 The 10 Common Prioritization Challenges.
  4. 🛠️ How To Build The RIGHT Prioritization Framework
  5. ✅ How we do product prioritization at Qawafel using ClickUp [case-study]

Let’s do it!
