Baroque art, also called late baroque or mannerist baroque is a phase of classical art that began in the mid-17th century and ended in the early theroc. It succeeded the Rococo style that had been popular since the early 18th century. The term “baroque” comes from the Spanish word meaning “mined”, due to the superposition and instability of Rococo architecture. The term was used pejoratively to describe the excesses of 17th-century creations, which were consciously artistic, sensual and complex, and more flamboyant than usual. Baroque art developed mainly in Northern Europe in the 18th century, not only from Flemish painting but also from German music as well as southern Italian architecture and French culture. In general, this period is considered to extend to about 1760. After this date, new tones became more and more important, and the naturalschlacht, while remaining an important source of inspiration for some great artists, no longer constituted a major part of Baroque imagery after about 1750.
