Edith Giovanna Gassion was born on December 19, 1915, in Belleville, a working-class neighborhood in Paris. Her parents, Louis-Alphonse Gassion and Annetta Maillard, were both performers, but their tumultuous relationship left Edith in the care of her maternal grandmother, Emma. Growing up in poverty, Edith endured a childhood marked by instability and hardship.

At the age of 14, Edith discovered her passion for singing while busking on the streets of Paris with her father, who was a street performer.
