Modern Art: A Guide to Understanding the World of an Artist

Modern art is a broad term used to describe art from the period around the end of the 19th century and the beginning of the 20th century. Artists during this time began to reject traditional and academic styles in favour of more abstract work that challenged viewers to interpret the meaning behind an image, not simply see colours and shapes. These artists created unapologetically unconventional pieces, using strange subject matter, expressionistic techniques, unusual angles, distortion, and other nontraditional methods to create works that were as much visceral as visual. While many people are intimidated by modern art, with some assuming it’s all pretentious nonsense or meaningless drivel, there is a lot more to these works than meets the eye. In this article, we will explore some basic definitions and explanations of modern art.
