[Punditry: Malthusianism]

One of the things I have noticed in my 666 years on this demon planet, is that in the last 100 years, the population of the “civilized” world seems more and more removed from basic causality — the opposite of the Butterfly Effect.

There are resultant effects for the choices people make.

Coincident with that is the overwhelming growth of urban populations vs rural. In like forever, cities have always been dependent upon the surrounding farms for sustenance, long-distance transportation being difficult, and food preservation being shit.

In earlier times, food production was the center of village life - without reliable food supply the village died. Luck played into survival, leadership of the elders or a chief, and minimizing risks. Villages in one area tended to be semi-related, so there was some community insurance if one crop was lost, or a bad month of hunting, but….

When Manors and City-States were all the rage, there’d be a King, or Lord, or Pharaoh, or Strong Man, or whatever, (not just some arrogant asshole rich guy as portrayed in modern arts) looking out for the long term survival of the city, being supported by the producers of the City-State. He had the “wealth” to invest in longer term strategies, resource development, crafting, defense, raiding, trade, but still, everyone was dependent on and aware of the circle of life, that work was necessary, honor, care, public good, and everyone needed to be together in that understanding, or they were incompatible and were exiled.

Skipping forward to the 19th and 20th centuries, it appears to be a generational creep, but most people now live in cities and seem to expect there to be food and water and hygiene and safety, as if that is the natural world.

People just “decide” they want to be herbivores...
People just “decide” anyone with more than they, are the evil-rich and undeserving…
People just “decide” that anyone with nothing are pure and good, without regard to being deserving…
People just “decide” they can do no work, and beg for cash on the medians… People just “decide” they don’t need insurance, or to put aside for less productive times…
People just “decide” to take out loans and pursue fields of expertise that have little hope of an income…
People just “decide” that the state is rich enough to support them as paupers…
People just “decide” that its ok to bring in, or allow in, millions of others from vastly different cultures…
People just “decide” they can have a sexual recreation without the worry of disease, or concern of raising their young…
People just “decide” they want to just party all the time, no children, no work assignments, no responsibility…
People just “decide” that having children puts no onus on them to train the younglings…
People just “decide” that they need to be in a criminal organization to survive/succeed in the major cities…
People just “decide” they deserve respect, doing nothing to deserve it…
People just “decide” they dont want to adult….

There are resultant effects for the choices people make.

People need to grow up. People need to have children and be a part of a family. People need to find a way to prosper while being part of the community. People need to make better choices.

It seems that many modern people are so divorced from the lessons the land can teach them, that spending a couple decades in agriculture, will illustrate what living, surviving, and succeeding really are.
