Representation Matters

Hi Katie! After reading and commenting on your Snapchat post, I happened upon this one. It furthers my feeling that you’re hurting your own credibility in getting so tripped up by skin color.

Here’s how I see it:

My wife is Chinese and has skin color that is lighter (nearly white, in fact) than the woman in the photo accompanying your post. So, based on your standard of skin color, would you disqualify my wife from doing this demo. Clearly, based on the balance of your post, you would not. After all, she’s Chinese.

Frankly, I do concur with your argument for greater and more appropriate representation for Asians, and for others across the diversity spectrum. Yet, referencing skin color is not the best way to do this. It can be inaccurate and insensitive. For example, how about those of us who may be perceived to be “white” — even if our actual heritage is mixed?

Just something to consider.
