What do We expect from the elite, and why that is the wrong question

In the aftermath of the vote for Brexit many commentators now turn to scrutinise the Left but more often look at the outcome of the referendum as a “No More” to elitist politics.

While that may be true, it is peculiar how their commentary still takes an essentially elitist point of view by either calling upon the elite to accept the vote, that is to reform themselves (not gonna happen), or to tell “them” that this was to be expected and that doom is upon us all.

What they do not call for but what seems the much more interesting question here is to how We can use the momentum to bring about change. How about to come up with suggestions for the electorate, not the elite, to participate and to ultimately seize power?

We as voters have been reduced to shortsighted Yes and No, or to Leave or Remain in a highjacked debate. In German, we explain outcomes or elections such as this with “Protestwahl” (protest vote) or sometimes with “Nichtwählerschaft” (non-votership).

In the aftermath of the Brexit, we turned to the market to see its reaction depicted in a falling Sterling and the disappearance of values measured in digits. Politicians refer to the “single market” as the first and sometimes sole reasons for the EU`s being. Where is the political vision and voice?

It is most evident that what is needed is reform for participation and forum for real debate. I am searching.
