Despite timeless lessons that beauty is just skin-deep or that “what is essential is invisible to the naked eye”, people are not only conscious of their physical appearance but they would go to great lengths to achieve better looks. The fact that the cosmetics industry is an imposing multi-billion global business attests to the extensive market and consumers of beauty products all round the world.

The Thriving and Developing Cosmetic Industry

Today of course, the price of beauty, or the cost of becoming beautiful has gone a notch cheaper. A milieu ago, only the rich and elite few could afford cosmetic products and services. Today however, beauty is almost a common commodity even among average income segments of the mass market. In other words, due significantly to technology and scientific breakthroughs that has made product development and manufacturing cheaper, beauty products and procedures are more affordable and accessible even for average income earners.

And even on the assumption that much of this trend is driven by more affordable ‘vanity’, the fact remains that various cosmetic options have established a vibrant market and industry which is good not just for individual consumers but to national economies. On the side of economics, the continuously healthy performance of Asian cosmetic saloons and healthcare centers in the last decade has provided employment, small-scale entrepreneurial opportunities, livelihood and employment in the region. For the market, liposuction, skin toning, wrinkle and warts removal are now easily available service that can help improve self-confidence and social desirability.

Popularity of Eye Surgery

In Korea double eyelid surgery has become a popular industry while in Singapore, eyebag removal has established a steady market. And their popularity has to do with the eyes as an integral element of beauty.

In any society, culture or period of history, the eyes has been considered a central symbol and standard of desirability. And of courses too, the eyes is one of the most easily visible and therefore noticeable feature of the face and body. Understandably, eye bags and other blemishes are visually distracting and therefore take away form a person’s over-all attractiveness.

But again, technology has something to do with the growing popularity of eyebag cosmetic procedures. Due to various scientific breakthroughs and technological advancements there are now in Korea and Singapore, non-surgical eyebag removal and double eyelid procedures that uses non-invasive laser technology and scarless procedure. Although, such non-invasive procedure involves longer healing time, they have not only been proven effective but safer compared to more traditional invasive methods.

And finally, double eyelid and eyebag removal have grown in popularity not due to people’s pursuit of beauty but because these procedures have apparent practical benefits. For instance, many scientists claim the removal of under-eye bags are primarily to enhance the shape and appearance of the eyes and therefore make a person look more fresh and young. But science claims that the effects are not only improved physical ‘looks’ but that eyelid surgery actually improves vision and treats ptosis, a condition characterized by drooping and sagging in the upper eyelids, which can obstruct vision. Apparently, lifting the upper lid removes excess skin and tissue and helps expand a person’s line of sight and generally improve sight.
