Assessment 2A-Fun palace and QVB
In the sixties of the 20th century, there was a significant revolution in terms of the culture and art in western countries. The field of architecture design has also been affected. Hence, a group of young and talented architectural designers were emerged. Cedric Price is one of them. He designed one theater which was the most unusual in the world, called Fun Palace. The inspiration of Fun Palace was that Cedric Price intended to erect a building which could be changed to anything. All things inside including chairs, stages and cafes could be changed and reset.
I choose Queen Victoria Building as the one compared with Fun Palace. In the initial completion, there were a concert hall, some coffee shops, offices, grocery shop, and exhibition room and so on inside the building but when QVB was just settled, it was designed to be a huge shopping center. However, a few years later, its music center was changed to be a library. In 1930s, QVB has experienced a big change, become the main city council office. However, at present, it is just a huge shopping mall.
There are some major similarities between Fun Palace and QVB. Firstly, they are both independent buildings. Secondly, their structures are similar. Furthermore, the purposes of these two buildings are for entertainment. However, they are still different. Fun Palace as an ideal theater can be changed and reset to anything and cannot be accepted by many people while QVB can be accepted by lots of people.
This is a new drawing of QVB. It actually is a conceptual 3 dimensional drawing. I made this conceptual building more flexible, which means every single part of it could be moved to left and right, up and down (changed and reset). I drew few showcases and display windows, which presents the activities on the QVB building.
