How to Send Email From HP Printers through Gmail

On our HP Printer, there is a feature called ‘Send to Email’. You can scan a document and have it sent to your email. What a basic functionality in the 21st century! But I’m having a hard time setting it up — and apparently its success came at the expense of my email security. I have to turn on ‘Allow less secure app’ in my gmail account setting to make it work!

I had mixed feelings about this. Why is it so hard to accomplish such a basic functionality? But it also gives my some sort of assurance. It’s possible to prevent third party tool from sending emails on my behalf, even if it has my password.

First, I followed the instruction on the HP Printer, which led me to a web portal. (The web port URL is displayed on the printer screen, but if your printer does not support this, you may find it by printing out the printer’s configuration page)

I was on Chrome, but it threw a big ‘insecure’ warning at me when I attempted to log to a page that requires the admin access. So I switched to Safari and it worked fine.

In the web portal, there is a section called Email to Print setup.
