THE Fiji Sevens team’s win of the nation’s first summer Olympic gold medal is a proud moment for all Pacific Islanders, says USP Vice Chancellor Professor Rajesh Chandra.
“This is a big deal for Fiji and for the Pacific as it demonstrates that we can overcome our limitations of size, low income, and many other vulnerabilities and handicaps and take on the big boys internationally,” he said.

“There are many cross-overs from this level of performance and confidence to other areas of our life.”
He made the comments in an email message to the university’s staff and students at its 14 campuses spread across the Pacific region.
“ Today, our rugby boys truly dazzled the world and showed the way world class sevens rugby should be played,” he said.
“This is a truly proud moment for all of us at the University and the Pacific.”
Fans were already celebrating before the final whistle was blown to seal Fiji’s convincing win against Great Britain 43–7 in the game’s inaugural tournament at Rio’s Deodoro Stadium.
Prime Minister Voreqe Bainimarama saluted the 7s team for their victory and for being “wonderful ambassadors.”
He paid special tribute to 7s coach Ben Ryan and team captain Osea Kolinisau for their inspiring leadership.
“Never before has the Fijian spirit soared so high as it does today,” said Bainimarama. “Never have we stood so tall as a nation.”
He said the victory was inspiration for Fijians to rededicate themselves to nation-building; “one nation, one people, playing an even greater role in the region and the world.”
Head of Journalism and former Fiji Times sports editor Dr Shailendra Singh said the victory was a defining moment for the country, because it’s “more than a game.”
“ It is a major unifying force,” said Dr Singh. “The entire nation — young, old, men, women, children and adults and people from across the political — divide will come together in celebration.”
