Birth of a new Wirex logo
You remember our old Wirex logo, right?
Geometrically pleasing with a simplicity that all too often is sadly lacking today! Yeah, that’s right, we liked it too.
But, after a lot of pointing and staring, we came up with a few niggles. Such as:
- It’s a bit too wide
- Not massively suitable for creating application icons
- Somewhat “leaky”, if you know what I mean? And, that’s not cool as it projects a sense of insecurity
You know what we did? We dumped it! Sad to see it go but we wanted to make our logo better. So, we redesigned the thing and thought long and hard about how it would work as an application icon too. We killed two birds with one stone.*
(*No actual birds were harmed in the making of this logo)
We made a few concepts. Alas, the paper archives aren’t preserved 😔 However, we do have a vector! 😉
But this is not enough; the design is critical to context. We began to try to see how these icons looked in life.
Wirex design competition
The founders of Wirex wanted a smorgasbord of design options to choose from. When we decided to rethink our logo, it was just one person (me) in the design team. To make things fun, as well as a little less onerous on resourcing, we decided to launch a contest, which was hosted on 99designs, a well known website.
Design competition: The brief
The design brief required a new icon for our iOS/Android application. We wanted people to find it both secure and reliable. Firstly, we wanted better visibility for icons on the main screen. It could be a symbol for Wirex in two letters, a cross, waves, or another idea; all suggestions were up for grabs.
In particular, a reimagination of the ‘Wirex waves’ was to be a crucial element. The logo had to fit within a square, not a rectangle, as this configuration was a source of growing design pains! Most of all, we needed something simple and clean.

Design competition: The findings
We wanted to collect as many concepts as possible and then refine these based upon our preferences. In the first few days, some 50 options were proposed. Although there were many submissions — sometimes displaying considerable creativity — only a small proportion of theses made it to the desks our Founders’ critical eye.
A grand total of 134 works were sent but only 18 of these progressed to the final round.
This submission was one of our favourites for quite a while, beating all others for sheer emotional impact and creativity.
Until, we were received the work below!
This grid corresponds to the parameters of the so-called golden ratio.
It is because of the special ratio, that the logo looks so slender and correct. We had found a winner!
Then, something rather strange begun to be realised. It turns out that the grid of the logo was not quite perfect, plus we wanted to make the inscription “wirex” without breaks. Our designer got to work!
We wanted to make the bend of the lines more “alive” like a wave.
After a whole week of drawing the logo, the work was finished and the result is now familiar to you all!
Next was the work on the formation of marketing kit, brand pages and upload icons in the App Store and Google Play
I hope those of you with inclinations to get creative have in some small way found a touch of inspiration from our logo redesign process.
We are always happy to hear about your ideas and what makes you get out of bed in the mornings. So, feel free to tweet us your design stories and more!
Coming soon: We will share more on how we went about designing our new cards. Stay tuned! 😎
