10 HORROR movies to watch on Mother’s Day
- Inside (À l’intérieur, 2007)
This one is out to make moms cringe! A crazy woman torments another woman on the brink of giving birth and whose husband had recently died. All the crazy one wants is the woman’s baby. Be prepared for intense moments.
2. Rosemary’s Baby (1968)
This is a mother’s classic. A young couple moves to a new house and the woman gets mysteriously pregnant. After the baby is born, all she can think about is the baby’s safety. Paranoia, delusion, and maybe the devil are involved in her journey.
3. Psycho (1960)
As Freud would put it, blame it all on the mother. In this movie, the psycho killer is haunted by his motherly figure. She even makes a couple of appearances. They all are worth looking out for.
4. Friday the 13th (1980)
Youngsters are brutally murdered by an unknown killer. The slaughter happens close to a lake where the young Jason Voorhees had died. Where is the mother in the story, you ask? Surprise!
5. Serial Mom (1994)
Kathleen Turner is a sweet mother who can’t help but to take anything against her beloved family very seriously. The body count starts! The cops are close to tear apart that image of the perfect suburban family that the mother is fighting for. Even when he is trying appeal to the masses, John Waters is still John Waters.
6. The Other Side of the Door (2016)
When will mothers learn that you can’t bring your deceased son back to life? Not even to say goodbye! We all know what happens next: Paranormal stuff! In this case, all she had to do was to keep the door shut and… guess what? She opens it. Hell breaks loose!
7. Goodnight, Mommy (Ich seh ich seh, 2014)
After extensive plastic surgery, a mother comes back home to her estranged sons. They can’t seem to recognizer her with all that bandage in her face. You start asking yourself, is she their real mother? Well, you will have to watch it to know if this movie should be in this list!
8. The Monster (2016)
The mother in this film could easily be the titular monster. Actually, the resentful daughter could as well be it. But they aren’t. There is a literal monster, and he is scary. That is when the maternal instinct kicks in, and the mother finally decides to fight for her daughter.
9. Shelley (2016)
A woman wants to be a mother but she and her husband are unable to have a child. They make a pact with their Romanian made to be a surrogate mother in exchange for money. Once again, paranoia, delusion and maybe the devil are involved. The unborn baby is affecting everyone’s life. I guess the film advocates for abortion in case of demonic possession.
10. The Babadook (2014)
A widow dealing with the violent death of her husband has also to deal with her son’s tantrums. He believes there is a monster lurking in the house. It is an intense supernatural suspense that takes maternal patience to its test until… well, the reveal is not as good as the rest of the movie. But it is still worth watching.
