I love this wording. It’s so hard to make this point, to the business people providing the project’s budget, or the project manager wanting an estimate on the time needed to design something.
In an interview with a company trying to add UX, no one wants to hear that design is not a straightforward series of steps that one follows each time.
My least favourite interview question is ‘What is your process?’ because my answer, that ‘it depends on the project, since they are different’, is never received well.
There are so many people selling ‘solutions’ in the form of books and conferences and companies fall for this. They believe they can find a formula that, if followed, will result in designers cranking out work like a factory production line. Predictable and taking the same amount of time to complete on each attempt.
