A Wagnerite in Rostov [191]

JUNE 23

11 AM: Yevgeny Prigozhin, Wagner financier, releases a video message accusing the Russian Federal Security Service (FSB), the administration of Vladimir Putin, Russian oligarchs, and other Russian officials of enormous corruption and punditry during the pre-2022 War in the Donbas. He then goes on to state that the Russian Ministry of Defense (MoD) provided false justifications to invade Ukraine to:

  1. Elevate the status of Sergey Shoigu, head of the MoD
  2. Enrich Russian oligarchs
  3. Install Viktor Medvechuk as president of Ukraine to help with point two, the enrichment of Russian oligarchs
  4. Punish the Americans and the “Zelenskyy regime” [1]
Prigozhin delivering the video message [1]

4:30 PM: Prigozhin appeals to the Russian Investigative Committee to investigate Shoigu and Gerasimov who, according to Prigozhin, are responsible for “tens of thousands of deaths of Russians and giving territory to the enemy” [2]

9 PM: Prigozhin releases a (possibly staged) video of a Russian (MoD) missile strike on a Wagner base, accompanied by the message,

“There was a missile strike on the Wagner PMC camps. Many casualties. According to eyewitnesses, the strike was carried out from the rear, that is, it was carried out by the military of the Russian Defense Ministry.” [3]

“In Bakhmut, defending the honor of Russia and the Russian army, we were shamelessly deceived. They attempted to deprive us of our homes and disperse PMC Wagner. We were ready to give up concessions to the MoD, give up weapons and find a solution on how we will protect our country further. But these scumbags… seeing that we were unbroken… carried out missile strikes at our rear camps. A huge number of our fighters and brothers-in-arms have died. We will make a decision on how to respond to this evildoing. The next step is ours.” [4]

9:27 PM: Prigozhin declares war on the MoD,

“PMC Wagner Commanders’ Council made a decision: the evil brought by the military leadership of the country must be stopped. They neglect the lives of soldiers. They forgot the word “justice”, and we will bring it back. Those, who destroyed today our guys, who destroyed tens, tens of thousands of lives of Russian soldiers will be punished. I’m asking: no one resist. Everyone who will try to resist, we will consider them a danger and destroy them immediately, including any checkpoints on our way. And any aviation that we see above our heads. I’m asking everyone to remain calm, do not succumb to provocations, and remain in their houses. Ideally, those along our way, do not go outside. After we finished what we started, we will return to the frontline to protect our motherland. Presidential authority, Government, Ministry of Internal Affairs, Rosgvardia, and other departments will continue operating as before. We will deal with those who destroy Russian soldiers. And we will return to the frontline. Justice in the Army will be restored. And after this, justice for the whole of Russia.” [5][6]
