Etymology:

Early History:

In the pre-Columbian era, the location of present-day New York City was inhabited by Algonquian Native Americans, such as the Lenape. The first documented visit to New York Harbor through a European was in 1524 through Italian Giovanni da Verrazzano, an explorer from Florence in the carrier of the French crown. He claimed the location for France and named it Nouvelle Angoulême (New Angoulême).
