Identity Fraud up 57% — Tips on Protection

What would you do if someone stole your Identity? Did you know that Identity fraud is up by 57%

Social Media has become somewhat of a Goldmine with Fraudsters increasingly able to access people’s personal information from social media sites. According to fraud prevention service Cifa — there was 148,000 victims in the UK in 2015 compared with 94,500 in 2014 — with 85% of the frauds were carried out online.

So stop and take a moment and perhaps review how your own social media profile looks like. Do you think you have to much personal information on your social media profile some of which should be private & could it be putting you at risk?

Fortunately as users of Social Media sites there are a few things which you can do in order to help protect against identity fraud. Here are some handy tips which used regularly will help.

1: Guard Personal Information —Keep personal information information off social media sites — information like Date of Birth, Home Address, Birthdays and pictures of your home should be kept private. Don’t even think about uploading a picture of your Bank, Credit Card or Driving License…. & yes some people have done this.

2: Use Privacy settings — the privacy settings within social media platforms are there for your benefit so make sure to use them. It is also worth remembering that privacy settings change from time to time so make sure you check them.

3: Use strong passwords. Do not use the same password or PIN for more than one account — don’t write passwords down the safest place to keep them is in your head.
