Early in creation not long after the Solar System was formed and not unlike it is today, the Sun was befriending all the planets and their moons, even Pluto who’s known for being a bit of a loner said,

‘Uff, go on then!’

The Earth’s Moon was a different kettle of fish all together and pretty damn cold to the firery celestial body.

‘Will you be my friend asked the Sun?’

The Moon was very surprised that an actual star wanted to be her friend, she’d had a crush on the Sun for millenia, but she was kind of attached.

Having the Sun’s luminescence shone on her made the Moon feel good, she smiled and then felt really clumsy, unattractive and pretty awkward.

Why does the Sun want to be friends with me? I’m so tiny, and have huge craters on my surface and as much as I’ve tried I can’t do anything about them.

It made her feel vulnerable and then quite annoyed.

‘Er…maybe…let me think about it?’ replied the Moon, trying to sound relaxed and cool but sounding cold and uptight.

‘Oh, yes…Sure, take your time,’ the Sun said with a sing song tone.

The Sun was very patient and got on with being the bright shiny centre of everything.

The moon felt terrible, sick with envy that the Sun was so awesome and it made her feel more and more horrible, so angry that she’d been shaken out of her night after night slumber. She got up at all ours and confused everyone.

The Sun left it a while but the Moon still didn’t reply to any of his messages sent of cute little shooting stars. Finally he thought this is silly, i’ll go and speak to her myself, she’s shy I can see that I’m sure she’ll warm to me. The Sun was feeling confident and asked the Moon again.

‘Will you be my friend?’

The Moon felt a surge of energy from the Sun’s attention and it made her feel good, she thought I’m fed up of playing second fiddle to the Earth, following her every move and really just being a glorified ballcock for the levels of the sea.

It was quite nice to get attention from a sexy star like the Sun, I must be special if he keeps asking me to be friends the Moon thought, but inside she still felt like a silly balcock and not exciting like the sun.

‘Let’s play a game,’ she said puffing out her surface, she felt bigger already.

‘I like games,’ grinned the Sun.

‘Let’s play catch, if you can catch me, then we can be friends.’

‘That sound’s like fun,’ replied the Sun, thinking this will be easy.

So the game began. As much as the Sun tried he wasn’t able to catch the Moon.

‘Crumbs, you’re good as this game,’ he told her.

‘And you’re not very good at playing catch are you? She said loudly making sure the whole Solar Sytem could hear.

It made the Sun feel small, and even became just a little bit dimmer.

All the other planets and moons giggled, the Moon puffed up her surface even more. The less glory the sun shone the less shadows in her craters and they didn’t looks so bad.

‘Shall I give you another go?’ teased the Moon

‘Yes thank you, mumbled the Sun feeling deflated but still ready to give it another try.

‘Let’s play hide and seek, see if you can find me,’ she felt more confident and shot off to hide even before the Sun could reply.

‘Hide and seek, yes…that sound easy.’

The Sun peeked over and under and around the Earth but the Moon was gone, vanished into the night sky. That’s magic he thought. He waited and waited and finally, when the moon was ready she showed her face.

‘Tadah! I win!’ I like being your friend it’s good fun,’ she said flouncing around the Earth whose tides were up and down all over the place.

All the planets and moons were impressed.

‘Hooray, now were friends, the Sun was pleased, even though he felt like he needed an afternoon nap.

‘Let’s play another game,’ said the Moon…Monsters! she growled making a big scary face.

The Sun was startled ‘but friends play nicely together’ he thought.

‘Yes, he replied, let’s play.’

‘The winner is the one who can eat the other,”

The Moon said winking at all the planets and their moons who thought this game sounded the best, if a little scary.

‘Yeaaahhhhh! Eat the Sun, eat the Sun! they all chanted.

The Sun felt a bit like everyone was against him and his beautiful shine became a little dimmer.

The Moon had a plan and talked the Earth into helping out.

The Sun was feeling like his batteries were almost on empty and decided to take a nap to recharge. He wasn’t paying much attention when the moon crept up on him and the Solar System watched at the she took huge bites out of him until there was nothing left.

The planets were shocked, their moons all hid out of sight at such a horrible sight the moon had eaten the Sun and was even glowing brightly.

‘I’m better than you! I’m better than you! You were a bright shining star and now look at you!’

The Moon was standing over the Sun chanting when he woke feeling quite refreshed after his nap though confused that he couldn’t see the rest of his friends in the solar system.

Meanwhile the Earth had been watching the Moon and was finally fed up of her bad behaviour towards her good friend the Sun and upset at the lack of care over the seas, so she directed a huge Tsunami to drench her.

The Moon, coughed and spluttered and the Sun giggled and dried her off and she went back to the Earth’s orbit. The Sun happy again and was able to shine for the whole of creation. The Moon took up her equally important role in the Solar System as a glorified balcock for the Earth’s ocean’s.

The Sun still believe’s he could have been friends with the Earth’s Moon, but now they’re sworn frenemies.

I’d love to hear your thoughts about my writing or the subject of the moon being a glorified balcock for the Earth’s ocean’s please leave any comments below.
