You’re My Friend.

I heard you say ‘you’re my friend,’

and the sky came to touch the earth,

we sat between the stars,

it was easy to reach out

and touch them all.

I remember it was raining, I opened up, told you my favourite bands,

my favourite songs,

my favourite singer

and standing at the door, you shared too,

a perfect gift in return.

A song played on the radio, one you’d heard before

I knew the title, the singer,

and the lyrics, I sung a chorus for you

and you were impressed and wanted to buy the single.

I felt happy,

more than ever before,

the roof flew away,

sand dunes rose,

and on the peak

our Bedouin robes bellowed.

I looked into your eyes

for a moment

and you let me.

But do I believe it?

No. But I want to.

Then you came again and again

and I opened the door each time and when I saw it was you

I felt more like me, happy

instead of being the sad me, suffocated me, given up me.

It was so easy

I told you I want to travel to escape, to find somewhere safe.

You said I could read his mind

always wanted a beach holiday too

it wasn’t exactly the trip I had in mind

but the walls fell away and the ocean met the sand

and we were under the shade of a papaya tree

and you reached out

a hand

and my hand fit

perfectly.

Until one day

you let go and I drifted away

and the only other time I felt your hand

was as a fist your eyes filled with hate,

your heart with rage

my hands empty

my eyes cold and dead

my heart stone

and carved with the words

do not

trust.
