CHLORITAB: Tablet for Disinfection
CHLORITAB is a unique tablet which generates or released Chlorine dioxide when in contact with humidity/moisture or water. It is a unique combination of ingredients which were till date found in a two component system like activator and releaser. It is the most convenient way to deliver high purity Chlorine Dioxide at the point of use.
Chlorine dioxide (not to be confused with Chlorine!) is a relatively weak oxidant. Consequently it is permitted to be freely present in drinking water in certain concentrations.
The same applies to ponds or basins that contain other living animals/organisms.
Chlorine dioxide has a long history extending over almost 200 years and was discovered in 1814 by Humphrey Davy. It is a unique oxidant and even at very low concentrations is highly effective in suppressing viruses, moulds and pathogenic bacteria.
Anaerobic bacteria are unable to develop resistance to chlorine dioxide because it destroys the cell structure.
Chlorine dioxide is a highly selective oxidizing agent and primarily reacts with organic substances. Chlorine dioxide does not produce any harmful or other residual products.
The major benefit of chlorine dioxide in comparison to other oxidizing agents(hydrogen peroxide, ozone and chlorine) is its low oxidation strength combined with its high oxidation capacity. Chlorine dioxide is often used for treating drinking water, processing and storing food, fruit cultivation and in the meat processing industry.
The more powerful the oxidant, the more harmful it is to living organisms.
Ozone may not be freely present in water due to its strength and the potential harmful effects on fish, for example. This is why ozone is always applied outside the reach of fish and measures are taken to ensure that there is no residual ozone present in the water.
Oxygen is a very weak oxidizing agent and must be present in water in the highest possible concentrations to prevent pathogens and to neutralize harmful (reducing) substances.
Chlorine dioxide in terms of its oxidizing strength is positioned just above oxygen, but far below ozone.
A permanent low concentration in water therefore is not a problem, for example, for fish and other living organisms.
In addition, the biological filter significantly better retains its condition when chlorine dioxide is used in comparison to other oxidizing agents, precisely due to its low oxidizing strength.
To neutralize the same quantity of contaminants with other oxidizing agents requires 2.5x as much product as chlorine dioxide. In other words, the concentration of chlorine dioxide needs to be only 40% in comparison to other oxidizing agents in order to kill off the same quantity of anaerobic bacteria or neutralize the same quantity of organic material. Because the concentration required to achieve the same effect is only 40%, the biological environment also experiences significantly less harm.
In contrast to many other oxidizing agents, chlorine dioxide also works very well at low temperatures and higher pH values. Because anaerobic bacteria (pathogens)have a very thin shell, they are killed off at very low concentrations.
Due to these properties, CHLORITAB is highly suitable for use in aquaculture. In actual practice the effect of chlorine dioxide becomes increasingly evident during long-term use:
