Thank you for this beautiful essay. I am a first generation American as well, my Dad moved to America from Canada because he firmly believed that America was doing things better and for better reasons than Canada {something I honestly don’t see :) } and my Mom is Latvian whose family was sent to America after being in deportation camps in Germany following WWII (they were on a list of people to be deported to a Soviet Gulag in Latvia — so they had to leave).

The hope and promise of America has always been a huge mantra in my life, and I am glad that it is still visible today to immigrants. And, if you want it, I sincerely hope you are successful gaining citizenship here. We honestly need MORE immigrants, not less, who understand the promise.
