How Wayuu Made was Founded
WAYUU MADE WAS FOUNDED WITH A WANDERLUST SPIRIT AND A SIMPLE GOAL: TO BRING TO THE WORLD THE DESIGNER QUALITY HANDMADE “MOCHILA” BAGS MADE BY THE LARGEST INDIGENOUS COMMUNITY IN COLOMBIA, THE WAYUU PEOPLE, WHILE CREATING A SUSTAINABLE ECONOMIC OPTION FOR THE WOMEN OF THE WAYUU TO PROVIDE FOR THEIR FAMILIES AND COMMUNITIES.
Every idea begins with a spark. One of our co-founders is from Colombia and came to Colorado for grad school. She brought several of her Wayuu bags and couldn’t finish a conversation without someone commenting on how beautiful her bags were. She spent the rest of her time in the U.S. fielding unsolicited offers for the bags and eventually returned home to start her other “career”. Fast forward a couple of years and she has since met and fallen in love with a man from, you guessed it, Colorado. She told him about her previous experiences with the bags made by the Wayuu people and he was fascinated not only by the quality of the bags but also the rich history of the people that have been making the bags for generations. After an initial visit to the La Guajira region, together, they conceived the idea for Wayuu Made.
Our founders have made it their mission to not only bring to the world the beauty of the Wayuu peoples’ handmade “mochila” bags, but to help them maintain the rich historical heritage of the Wayuu culture, which until recently has existed relatively undisturbed in the far reaches of the Guajira Peninsula in northeastern Colombia. Over the past 10 years the future of the Wayuu people has been put in jeopardy as a result of the exploitation of land and misallocated water resources. We not only buy directly from the Wayuu people but give back a portion of sales going directly to supporting initiatives in the region, specifically water resources via the organization Aguayuda.
We believe that buying handbags should be carefree and fun. It should leave you happy and feeling better about the way you look. A bag isn’t just a thing that you buy, it is a part of who you are and what you believe in. If you like to know where your product comes from and feel empowered by supporting the person whose hands it was made by, this is the bag for you.
There’s nothing complicated about it. Good fashion, good people, good outcome.
