My name is Bingqing Wu, and I am a junior majoring in Elementary Education and Communication Studies. After living in China for almost 19 years, I came to America because of the desire to learn a new culture and to become more open minded.

In China, most of our teachers are rigorous. They put too much attention on students’ exam scores. That makes students and parents feel really stressful. Although China has a matured education system, I feel pushing too much on students’ scores is a considerable shortcoming. As an expectant educator, I want to focus more on teaching students how to study instead of how to pass an exam. I think one of the most important abilities we must help students achieve is the ability of learning.

After the first week of this semester, I learned that social study is a class offers comprehensive knowledge. I have never learned a social study class in China. We have history, sociology and geography classes instead. We learned different cultures from all over the world through these classes. I think it is useful to learn these information because knowing these helps me to become the teacher I want to be. I learned that everyone is unique, so I have to adapt different teaching strategies in order to satisfy different student’s needs. I will fail to teach students how to study independently if I am not aware of the fact that every one of them is different.
