A Day In Richmond’s Maymont Park

Richmond’s Maymont Park might be one of Central Virginia’s best-hidden treasures. The park centers around a Victorian Mansion that was built in 1893 by Major James Dooley. The estate was called Maymont after his wife, Sallie May.

Per Dooley’s will, the 100-acre estate was left to the City of Richmond after their deaths and it’s been a public park for the last 75 years.

Featuring rolling hills, lush gardens, open meadows and wooded escapes, the park really is a must-see on a sunny summer weekend. Admission is free and there is plenty to do for families and couples and groups.

It’s probably one of the few places in the area where you can see buffalo, bald eagles, cows, goats, raptors, alligators, waterfalls, Japanese and Italian gardens and plant life and Victorian architecture all in one location.

And pack a Gatorade. Just an hour stroll will melt your muscles with the steep trails (workout for the day COMPLETE!).

Check out some of my pictures from today’s jaunt through Maymont.
