Punishments are the inspiration for cloth clips. The thumb and the forefinger pinching the faulting ears are supplanted by two plastic, metal or wooden sides joined by a collapsible spring. Unlike its inspiration, the job of the cloth clip is not to give pain. It just holds on to, if not anything then itself. Outside the balcony, there are over ten of them. With no cloth job at hand, they are pinched on to the line like a faded rainbow that the planet Earth makes on a fuddled day.
